Museum and House of salt
Over 100,000 people visit the Nin Saltworks annually. The entire saltworks is a magical museum, with a history spanning over 1500 years. Archaeological findings from the time of the Liburnians (Illyrians), a Roman lock, the Velebit wind, healing mud, over 200 bird species, and ancient tools bear witness to its rich history. The saltworks narrates the story of salt through wars, celebrations, love, pleasure, and labor. Despite many changes over time, one thing remains constant – salt is still harvested by hand, just as it was in the past, with a great deal of love and enjoyment. The fields of Nin's salt provide the best of the sun, the Adriatic Sea, and the Velebit wind for generations.
Within the saltworks, you will find our small museum, 'Salt House.' Here, you can step into the past through black and white photographs from a distant era, old working tools, and wagons once used to transport salt from the pools to storage. Simultaneously, you can step into the present through an interactive model of the unique natural reserve and watch a documentary film in Croatian with subtitles in German and English.
Immerse yourself in the captivating museum of the only ecological saltworks in the Adriatic Sea, which will enchant you with words, images, and deeds, teaching you about the challenging but valuable things we preserve for future generations. Immerse yourself in our story of salt. Your Nin Saltworks.
